Elsa’s anxiety at her father’s fury eased when she saw him laugh. The two men walked toward the livestock shelter, Cerdic towering over her father.

“Your man smoothed things out, it seems,” her mother said. “I was a bit concerned. Your father has been raging at me ever since you took the job at the castle.”

“He isn’t my man,” Elsa murmured, and missed her mother’s look of disbelief. “He does have a way with people, though. It probably comes from running a crumbling castle full of junk for the past six hundred thousand years.”

“Really? Six hundred thousand? Is he really that old?” piped up her sister Astrid.

“Every bit of it and maybe more. Just go ask him and see what he says. He’s so old his bones are turning to fossils within his body.”

“Do you think perhaps you’re being a bit rough on him?” her mother asked.

“No. Not a bit. He has the notion we’re fated mates or some such nonsense, and he’s at me about it constantly. He’ll barely let me out of his sight. He claimed he knew when he smelled me the day I came to the castle, and he’s been begging me to let him bite me and do unspeakable things ever since.”

Her mother’s eyes went wide. “Elsa …”

“What? Don’t tell me you believe in that nonsense.”

Her mother bit her lip. “Why don’t we join the others. You can tell us about life at the castle.”
